CHAPTER XIV: ART OR TEMPERANCE
ARTEMIS & APOLLO
Artemis is the Moon and Apollo is the Sun; this Trump represents their conjunction or unity. An image of that conjunction is the eclipse. Artemis, as the Amazon (or martial maid) is an adolescent stage of the High Priestess (Trump II). She is the patroness of youth. As a virgin, Artemis suggests that capacity of the psyche to serve as an intact vessel of containment. The High Priestess has incorporated the Solar aspect within herself. This is not so with Artemis, as the Amazon.
Her solar twin, Apollo, represents her spiritual animus personified. It is a tandem relationship where they are twins of the same mother. Because she represents a less-mature aspect of herself, her solar component is projected as Apollo. Apollo wants no competitors. As an example of this, consider the introspective, but dedicated young artist or musician, whose love affairs pale in comparison with the consistency and inspiration of her creative spirit. Her love affair is with her art; she love the inspiration. She is an "arty-ms."
Artemis is typically in motion, darting and flitting. However, she always seems to be moving away most of the time, gaining distance from things. Hunting is an aspect of her supervision over the life and death of wild animals, symbolizing our untransformed instincts. In modern life she may hunt with a camera, or hunt and gather other things, such as art collections or research. Her sexual drive is quite natural, but Artemis as Amazon lacks the cultural refinements of a sophisticated lover. These qualities of Artemis, the deep interiority, pristine freshness, imaginal containment, and freedom from external containment are similar to puer psychology. Both are a movement inward, away from pragmatism and heroic acts, toward imagination. She rules the woman's mysteries ("Ms.teries").
For these and other reason, Artemis/Apollo represents the Trump XIV, Art. Art is a process, moving from the Lunar to Solar aspects on the Middle Pillar, from unconscious, occult or hidden forms toward full conscious awareness. This represents a transmutation of opposites, forming an androgynous figure. Artemis/Apollo was originally known as Temperance because when they merge with consciousness, they temper, combine and harmonize the psychic and material natures of the Moon and the Sun.
This classic twin-set joins wildness and terror on the borderline of equilibrium. Artemis experiences phenomena androgynously while retaining her femininity. She confers full-fledged transformations through expanding consciousness, not through a sexual role-reversal. In the blending of opposites, Artemis presents the anima (or diffuse consciousness) and Apollo represents the animus (or logical processes).
In Greek mythology, Artemis is the daughter of Leto and Zeus, and twin sister of Apollo. Artemis is the goddess of the wilderness, the hunt and wild animals, and fertility (she became a goddess of fertility and childbirth mainly in cities). She was often depicted with the crescent of the moon above her forehead and was sometimes identified with Selene (goddess of the moon). Artemis was one of the Olympians and a virgin goddess. Her main vocation was to roam mountain forests and uncultivated land with her nymphs in attendance hunting for lions, panthers, hinds and stags. Contradictory to the later, she helped in protecting and seeing to their well-being, also their safety and reproduction. She was armed with a bow and arrows which were made by Hephaestus and the Cyclopes.
In one legend, Artemis was born one day before her brother Apollo. Her mother gave birth to her on the island of Ortygia, then, almost immediately after her birth, she helped her mother to cross the straits over to Delos, where she then delivered Apollo. This was the beginnings of her role as guardian of young children and patron of women in childbirth. Being a goddess of contradictions, she was the protectress of women in labor, but it was said that the arrows of Artemis brought them sudden death while giving birth.
As was her brother, Apollo, Artemis was a divinity of healing, but also brought and spread diseases such as leprosy, rabies and even gout. The fact that these archetypal dynamics are linked as twin-forces suggests the primal effects of both sun and moon on the motions of earth and the e-motions of human beings. It is a well-documented phenomenon that solar flares or sunspots effect or correlate with disruptions in human behavior. The effect of moon, and Full Moon in particular, is reflected in the term lunacy. This effect is noted monthly by those in the medical, public safety and mental health fields.
The Twins may be considered an archetypal basis of psi phenomena or the remote sharing of information among two or more individuals. It is a well-known anomaly that twins often perceive what is happening to their identical sibling even when they are seemingly separated. The effects of geomagnetics, mediated by the Schumann's resonances, influenced by sun and moon, are covered here in relation to psi experiences.

Temperance - The letter Samekh 60, Sagittarius, an ovum, fertility - Part 1
There are parts of this work that may require deep contemplation and/or meditation but it is worth the effort.
This is the path from Yesod the Moon to Tipareth the Sun.
Its line from AIQ BEKAR the 9 chambers is 666, one that might interest some. 6 Vau is sex, 60 Samekh is fertility and 600 is final Mem, the maternal creative principle in cosmic proportion. This number in many ways holds the early commandment "go forth and multiply" or "And God blessed them, and God said unto them, be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth" (Gen 1;28).
The phrase "dominion over" has been misused for a long time to justify the beast in man and his desire for self gratification, the first part seems to be totally overlooked, "replenish the earth". "It ascends from the earth to the heaven again it descends to the earth and receives the force of things superior and inferior" (The Emerald Tablet). Temperance/Sagittarius is the arrow - at one time the idea of sin was to miss the mark with the bow and arrow - let us assume this arrow is fired to the heavens, in this instance the arrow head has its point up, the symbol of fire.
With imagination the shaft and bow can be symbolized as a cross -- this Alchemic Sulphur, the flame and the soul, in its return. Upon the chest of the Angel of Temperance is the fire sign. The flame rises from that which matters transmuting this matter to light.
The above image has both heads illumined, one is fire and one is water - one the energy projects upward as in the flame the path of return and one descends invigorating and illuminating that which will receive it - a holy grail (Mem, meditation).
"It ascends from the earth to the heaven again it descends to the earth and receives the force of things superior and inferior." The 2 heads are lit, surrounded by light. The flame is not the light or darkness it separates the 2.
Our fiery arrow has a journey and destination and the card clearly shows this.
The path leads to the crown of Kether, Godhead. This is the same idea that appears in the Moon, as I have said the Moon is Qoph 100 that which is transcendent of life and death, Kether is transcendent of life and death, I have also suggested that the Moon, the hidden occult light on the card is Kether - I would hope this is beginning to clarify itself more now.
In the Moon there is a darkness but Temperance is day, this has much to say; one the dark night of the soul where one journeys towards the light, the other is in the light and can travel with the speed of an arrow.
If we look at the Moon on the Moon card it appears as the Moon upon the Sun.
The idea of unifying these 2 is at the heart of alchemy, the Moon is a silver color and the Sun Golden, these 2 metals do not corrupt. The salt is pure but when in water it dissolves as the Moon in the night sky when it is in its dark phase and reappears like the salt when the water of that night subsides. The salt becomes a purified virgin in order to marry the groom. The Moon is Yesod, the sphere of the purifying intelligence "The Ninth Path is the Purifying Intelligence. ..." and the sun Tipareth "The Sixth Path is called the Intelligence of the Mediating Influence... ". The union of these 2 is the Hermetic wedding http://www.crcsite. org/wedguide. htm .
The flame rises from the wick, Tau - this is the path from Malkuth the Kingdom to Yesod, the blue/black flame merges with the white light at Tiphareth (the wedding) the white light rises into the supernal where the bride becomes the Mother and the groom the Father. "Ye cannot go to the father save through the SUN/SON".
Temperance is the path from Yesod to Tipareth this is the blue/black flame - the path of reason. "The Twenty-second Path is the Faithful Intelligence, and is so called because by it spiritual virtues are increased, and all dwellers on earth are under its shadow". Reason unites the images of the dreaming (the Moon) with the structure of day consciousness (the Sun), it puts the 2 together to form 1 cohesive statement or idea just as is taking place here. Let me make a distinction between the intellect and the idea of reason, the word re son suggests to bring the sun/son back in some manner, re or ra is the Sun so we have sun/sun and as we can see there is something born anew from this light.
The bride becomes the Mother and the groom the Father and in this the new is born. The reason behind something is its cause, the one thing.
Tis true without lying, certain most true. That which is below is like that which is above that which is above is like that which is below to do the miracles of one only thing. And as all things have been arose from one by the mediation of one: so all things have their birth from this one thing by adaptation. The Sun is its father, the moon its mother, the wind hath carried it in its belly, the earth its nurse. The father of all perfection in the whole world is here. Its force or power is entire if it be converted into earth.
"Only by doing the work can one know the work"
(Paul Tisdell)
PHYSICAL FORM:
ART (Trump XIV) depicts the alchemical blending of fire and water. From a biological perspective, the active hot principle of sulphur is attributed to the left hemisphere of the brain. The more passive, lunar principle of mercury is attributed to the right hemisphere. There are two nitrogen-containing organic compounds in the brain called amines. These two compounds have been proposed as chemical mediators of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems of arousal.
Noradrenalin corresponds to solar Apollo, and works through the sympathetic system. From this perspective, Apollo facilitates adaption to external reality. Noradrenalin produces an excited, anxious state which culminates in ecstasy. Serotonin corresponds with Artemis and the right hemisphere of the brain. Working through the parasympathetic system it creates a relaxed condition, like meditation.
Artemis/Apollo represents serotinin and noradrenalin being poured simultaneously into the "cauldron", located in the hypothalamus or third Ventricle of the brain. It represents a pain-pleasure balance. Artemis/Apollo represents the Consummation of the Royal Marriage. In ancient times, the brother-sister union was generally reserved for royal couples, and may be the root of this metaphor. When this chemical wedding occurs in our body, it produces the ability to remain active (noradrenergic) while inactive (serotonergic).
This is using action to attain non-action, as in Buddhist meditation. This paradoxical state symbolizes the twin divinities. We experience brother/sister relations at the emotional level with amazonian women. Since they share similar activities and challenges, artistic or androgynous men and women understand one another. This type of woman may marry and even have children, but they are never dependent on a man for their fulfillment, like a maternal or clinging-vine type person. They make terrific colleagues.
The Artemis woman is not interested in too much personal intimacy. She can seem aloof, cold, efficient, and even self-sufficient. She has little patience for weakness and sentimentality, and will be repugnant to the regressive side of man, with his anima possessions. She has no tolerance for moodiness. Artemis has a furtive and moonlit anxiety about sexual matters, but she is not prudish.
Her desire for personal privacy is territorial, not stemming from a fear of invasion. The homosexual tone associated with hair-grooming and cosmetic weightlifting is also a part of Artemis/Apollo's correspondences. With this androgynous nature, Artemis/Apollo woman feels confident that she can succeed in any chosen field (man's or woman's), provided she is proficient in her craft (ART). This type dominates the equestrian field. Specific occupations associated with Artemis/Apollo are:

-
- ARTEMIS: (Roman Diana) associated with the moon, twin sister of Apollo, the sun; goddess of the forest and the hunt, archer who carried a silver bow (like Apollo); virgin goddess; brought health and well-being to virginal maidens; protectress of childbirth.
- Cold, chaste, quick to be offended by men.
- Lady of the beasts, valuing wild nature more than human feelings and relationships
- Myth of Actaeon: Actaeon saw Artemis in the forest and watched her bathe. Feeling violated by this voyeurism, Artemis turned him into a stag who was then hunted and torn apart by his own dogs.
- This myth implies that Actaeon ran afoul of his own instincts, his ego not up to such an awesome encounter with a deity. (It is always dangerous to stumble over such transpersonal energies unexpectedly, or when the ego is unprepared.)
- Apollo was jealous of Artemis’ love for Orion, a great hunter, so when Orion was swimming in the ocean one day, Apollo challenged Artemis’ competiveness by getting her to hit that speck in the ocean with her bow and arrow. She thus killed Orion.
- This pictures how relationships can be destroyed in the Artemis woman because of the jealousy of the spiritual animus (the masculine principle in the female). It is as if the Artemis woman has a partner built into her own psyche, which wants no competition from the human realm.
- Artemis women tend to be efficient, self-sufficient, and not amenable to personal intimacy.
- As an inner experience, the Artemis principle appears as an attitude that is coldly factual and impersonal and can be as aloof and indifferent as natrue.
- The inner Artemis experience will be felt as cruel because it is indifferent to personal human feeling and is harsh toward weakness and regressive tendencies.
- Artemis woman is devoid of sentimentality in contrast to Demeter, who tends to be sentimental and protective.
- In women, Artemis embodies the “survival of the fittest” principle; in men, we might call her the natural anima (the feminine principle of the male psyche).
- Artemis woman can be cruel to weakness but helpful to strength, and so this principle is growth-promoting to those for whom growth is possible; she will be hated by the regressive aspect of humanity.
